Why 30, 14 and 2 days
You can take the test up to a month before the expiry date without losing any time on the new certificate, so the first reminder arrives at the start of that window. The second gives you time to book in a busy month, when stations fill two to three weeks ahead. The last is the one you cannot ignore. Each email links to the nearest test centres and to the car's full MOT history.
Questions people ask
What happens if my MOT runs out?
Driving without a valid MOT carries a fine of up to £1,000 and invalidates most insurance policies. The only legal journey is to a pre-booked test or to repairs arising from one. There is no grace period.
When is my MOT due?
The expiry date is on the last certificate and on the car's MOT history. Enter the registration above and the reminder is set from the date DVSA holds; you can also see it any time with the free MOT check.
Can I get my MOT done early?
Yes. Test up to a month (minus a day) before the expiry date and the new certificate still runs from the old expiry, so you lose nothing. The 30-day reminder is timed for exactly that window.
