If you ride, nine stations take motorcycles; if you drive a van over 3,000kg, 25 are licensed for class 7. Cars tested in the CB postcode area fail their MOT 28.6% of the time, level with the national average, and a tyre worn or cut to the cords is the defect recorded most often.

Of every hundred cars presented for an MOT in the CB area, about 29 fail. Nationally the figure is 28, so Cambridge and its surroundings are typical. The most common defect on failed tests here is a tyre worn or cut to the cords, which runs 113% above the national rate for that defect. Based on 688,107 tests recorded by DVSA.
Bars show how often each defect appears on failed tests in this area. The figure in italics is the difference from the national rate for that defect.
Tyres are an easy failure to avoid. Check the tread and look for cuts and bulges the week before the test, not on the forecourt. The UK-wide failure figures show the same pattern, and our guide to MOT advisories puts a number on how often a noted item fails the following year.
DVSA sets a maximum test fee, and no station in Cambridge can charge more than £54.85 for a car. Most charge less: chains and larger independents often advertise £30 to £40, and a few quote the full amount. The price is for the test only; any repair is separate and you are free to have it done elsewhere.
October is the busiest month for MOTs in the CB area, with about 66% more tests than April. If your test falls in a busy month, book two to three weeks ahead; in a quiet one, most stations can fit you in within days.
A failed car left at the garage for repair gets a free retest. Take it away and bring it back within ten working days and the retest is free for the common small items (bulbs, wipers, tyres, mirrors, seatbelts) and half price at most for the rest. Miss the ten days and you pay for a full test.
You can drive to a pre-booked test with no MOT, and to a garage for repairs found at the test. That is the only situation where driving without one is legal, and the car must still be roadworthy and insured.
The next nearest places with MOT stations are Waterbeach MOT garages (2), Royston MOT garages (21), MOT centres in Newmarket (11), Ely MOT garages (29), Saffron Walden MOT garages (11) and Huntingdon MOT garages (34).
Two minutes with the MOT checker shows what the tester noted last year, which is the best checklist you will get before paying for a test. The reliability figures by model cover Ford Focus, Toyota Yaris and Vauxhall Astra and 687 others.
85 garages in Cambridge are authorised by DVSA to carry out MOT tests, as of the September 2026 register. Nine of them test motorcycles and 25 test class 7 vans.
The maximum fee set by DVSA is £54.85 for a car and £29.65 for a motorcycle, and no Cambridge station can charge more. Many charge £30 to £45 for a car. A retest within ten working days at the same station is free for a list of minor items and reduced for the rest.
Nine stations in Cambridge hold the class 1 and 2 authorisation, including Kingsway Motorcycles, E-Tech Vehicle Services LTD and A G Toft Garage. Use the Motorcycles filter above to see all of them.
Yes. 25 Cambridge stations are authorised for class 7, which covers vans between 3,000kg and 3,500kg, among them Halfords Autocentre, Regency Autos Limited and Steven Eagell Toyota. The maximum class 7 fee is £58.60.
October is the busiest month for MOT tests in the CB postcode area, and April the quietest. Stations fill up two to three weeks ahead in the peak months, so book early if your certificate expires then.
A tyre worn or cut to the cords is the most common defect on failed tests in the CB area, appearing on 10.03% of fails, followed by a sidelight not working (9.72%). The local first-time fail rate is 28.6%.
Yes, to a pre-booked test and to a garage for repairs found at a test, provided the car is roadworthy and insured. That is the only situation in which driving without an MOT is legal.
