Reading has 85 MOT stations approved by DVSA, and every one of them is listed below with its address, phone number and the classes of vehicle it is licensed to test. Seven of them test motorcycles and 23 are authorised for class 7 vans between 3,000kg and 3,500kg. Locally, 25.8% of tests end in a fail against 28.2% across Britain; the commonest reason in the RG area is a sidelight not working.

Of every hundred cars presented for an MOT in the RG area, about 26 fail. Nationally the figure is 28, so Reading and its surroundings are doing better than most of Britain. The most common defect on failed tests here is a sidelight not working. Based on 1,496,497 tests recorded by DVSA.
Bars show how often each defect appears on failed tests in this area. The figure in italics is the difference from the national rate for that defect.
A blown bulb fails the test as surely as a worn brake, and a bulb is a few pounds. Check brake lights with the car reversed up to a wall. The UK-wide failure figures show the same pattern, and our advisory conversion table puts a number on how often a noted item fails the following year.
The £54.85 figure is a ceiling, not a price list. Reading garages compete on the test fee because they hope to do the repairs, so the test itself is often £30 to £45. You are under no obligation to have failures fixed where the car was tested.
March is the busiest month for MOTs in the RG area, with about 66% more tests than April. If your test falls in a busy month, book two to three weeks ahead; in a quiet one, most stations can fit you in within days.
A failed car left at the garage for repair gets a free retest. Take it away and bring it back within ten working days and the retest is free for the common small items (bulbs, wipers, tyres, mirrors, seatbelts) and half price at most for the rest. Miss the ten days and you pay for a full test.
You can drive to a pre-booked test with no MOT, and to a garage for repairs found at the test. That is the only situation where driving without one is legal, and the car must still be roadworthy and insured.
If none of the Reading stations suits, these neighbouring towns are a short drive away: Bracknell test centres (18), MOT centres in Wokingham (23), MOT centres in Woodcote (2), MOT centres in Henley on Thames (9), Aldermaston MOT garages (2) and MOT centres in Tadley (5).
Run a MOT history check before the test: it lists the advisories from last year and tells you how often that kind of advisory becomes a failure. The reliability figures by model cover Ford Focus, Land Rover Range Rover (all models) and Nissan Qashqai and 687 others.
85 garages in Reading are authorised by DVSA to carry out MOT tests, as of the September 2026 register. Seven of them test motorcycles and 23 test class 7 vans.
The maximum fee set by DVSA is £54.85 for a car and £29.65 for a motorcycle, and no Reading station can charge more. Many charge £30 to £45 for a car. A retest within ten working days at the same station is free for a list of minor items and reduced for the rest.
Seven stations in Reading hold the class 1 and 2 authorisation, including Baltech Motorcycles, First Cars Reading Limited and MOT Bay South Reading. Use the Motorcycles filter above to see all of them.
Yes. 23 Reading stations are authorised for class 7, which covers vans between 3,000kg and 3,500kg, among them First Cars Reading Limited, MOT Centre Reading LTD and Pickford Auto Centre Limited. The maximum class 7 fee is £58.60.
March is the busiest month for MOT tests in the RG postcode area, and April the quietest. Stations fill up two to three weeks ahead in the peak months, so book early if your certificate expires then.
A sidelight not working is the most common defect on failed tests in the RG area, appearing on 9.2% of fails, followed by a tyre worn or cut to the cords (8.44%). The local first-time fail rate is 25.8%.
Yes, to a pre-booked test and to a garage for repairs found at a test, provided the car is roadworthy and insured. That is the only situation in which driving without an MOT is legal.
